“The Santa Cruz County Junior Golf Association won the inaugural Bay Cup in heavy winds and rain Sunday at Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course.
Santa Cruz defeated the AT&T Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association 12 1/2 to 5 1/2 in a Ryder Cup-like tournament.
Ben Edens, 17; Alec Phillips, 16; Matthew Holcomb, 14; Jake Utic, 17 and Jacob Lutz, 15, played in 18-hole matches for the Santa Cruz boys team and Nicolas Weng, 13; Nicolas Gavasse, 13; and Cody Gavasse, 11, competed in nine-hole matches.
Antonia Malate, 15; Chloe Weng, 12; and Isabella Mendez, 14, played in 18-hole matches for the Santa Cruz girls and Amanda Fort, 16; Megan Eldridge, 15; and Kalea Hall, 10, competed in nine-hole matches.
The AT&T team featured George McNeely, Josh Quarles, Josh Yeater, Ethan Sippel, Irene Jun, Sydney Craven, Brenna Ozel and Nikki Iniakov in 18-hole matches and Jonathan Chen, Cullen Pritchard, Jara Gomez, Sierra Glassman, Robby Marshall and Natalie Powell in nine-hole matches.
The first nine holes for the 18-hole matches were played as a team (two players from each team together playing alternate-shot foursomes as is done in the Ryder Cup) and the back nine was individual matches (AT&T 1 vs. Santa Cruz 1, AT&T 2 vs. Santa Cruz 2, etc.).
The Bay Cup trophy will be on display at DeLaveaga Golf Course for local players and fans to savor.”
