Ace on No. 18 wins SCCAL boys golf title for Santa Cruz freshman Holcomb

“Matthew Holcomb’s 6-iron tee shot on the 169-yard 18th hole at pristine Pasatiempo Golf Club landed with a thud, 15 feet to the left of the pin on the heavily sloped green. It stayed still for a long second.

Then it began a slow trickle toward the pin. Its pace allowed spectators to encourage others to pay attention to what could be a signature moment in local golf history. Then, the two dozen or so players, parents and coaches surrounding the green, plus the three other members in the foursome, erupted like a gallery of thousands when the ball finally dropped in the cup.

The freshman’s ace wasn’t just his first and the first in at least the past 17 years of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Golf Championship — longer than Holcomb has been alive. It also put won him the league title, making him the first in his class to accomplish that feat.”
